Warren Tool Library recently partnered with United Healthcare and non-profit KaBOOM to build a new and improved playspace at Detroit Prep. Extensive research has shown that play is a critical component in a child’s learning process. Through play time, students are encouraged to explore their surroundings, navigate relationships and social situations, and learn what it means to be part of a collective group. Skills garnered through positive playtime interaction include cognitive flexibility,
language, problem solving, creativity and building teamwork.
Over the past three years, the children (K-4th grade) attending Detroit Prep had no playground to use during recess. Until now, the only area was a parking lot surrounded by woodchips, but still the students worked together to make up new games and experience joy-filled playtime despite the lack of equipment and structure. Building this monkey bar structure was the first-step toward providing a full-sized playground that will fit the growing community of Detroit Prep for many years to come.
